New hobby idea: using phrases that sound like down-home folksy expressions you learned from your grandma but are actually just nonsense you just made up

– that man really salts my melon!

– you know what they say, it takes a bushel of corn to feed one chicken

– a louse will live on any head it lands on

– don’t put down a salt lick and say you ain’t got cows

– there’s a guy who eats half the berries and says the pie shell’s too big

– like digging a pond and hoping for ducks

This was supposed to be a joke and all but as a southerner, these still make sense.

its weird these don’t mean anything but you can still kind of intuit what they would mean if they were things people actually said.

@lexicalpsychopathy I literally can’t help but picture you saying all of these

That man really salts my melon: Salt is actually frequently added to melons around here, so someone who salted your melon would be doing you a favor, or make something more appealing. Even though the framing presents it as a negative thing, so maybe you’d use it for someone who annoys you by doing you a favor.

It takes a bushel of corn to feed one chicken: Even if something might seem like a small ask, over time it might add up. A single chicken might eat a small amount of corn in a single day, but over time you’ll find you’ve bought lots of corn. Therefore, something that seems miniscule may in fact be a large commitment.

A louse will live on any head in lands on: Everyone can suffer through bad times and ill luck, regardless of their lot in life. (ie, anyone can suffer from depression, even if they haven’t got it “bad enough”)

Don’t put down a salt lick and say you ain’t got cows: There are multiple possible meanings for this. My favorite is don’t take time fixing a problem you don’t even have, ie, if you don’t have cows, you don’t have the problem of your cows needing a salt lick.

There’s a guy who eats half the berries and says the pie shell’s too big: Don’t blame circumstances for a problem of your own creation.

Like digging a pond and hoping for ducks: Don’t just hope something will turn out after one step, actually follow through all of them. Your pond could attract ducks, sure, or you could just go get ducks to live in your pond.

Seriously, every single one of these nonsenses you just made up follow a certain internal logic and make perfect sense.

So my boyfriend came out as trans last night and I realized something… back when we first started dating we identified as lesbians, then I came out as trans and consequently realized I’m bisexual, and now I’m in a gay relationship. So what I’m trying to say is that I have actually been LGBT as a singular person. Every single acronym. I have ascended and reached gay nirvana

a few years ago, 4chan’s /v/ board discovered a game about playing baseball with Winnie the Pooh characters on Disney’s Japanese website

the thing about this game was that it was insanely difficult. the “normal” characters in the game’s earlier levels required pretty precise timing to hit their pitches, and as you progressed through the games levels and made it to characters like tigger and owl the game flat-out started cheating. tigger’s pitches would zig-zag in mid-air, owl’s pitches would turn invisible halfway through and you had to hit them on pure timing alone, and so on. it was insanely hard and everyone was enamored by it. why is this winnie the pooh game for babies insanely hard, requiring reaction times that almost seemed inhuman?

then people beat all of those characters and made it to christopher robin. christopher robin was next to impossible to beat. he incorporated every previous character’s throwing quirks and would switch them up with every pitch. he would sometimes even combine them, like pitching invisible screwballs. you couldn’t defeat him.

everyone on /v/ loved this game. it gelled perfectly with the internet’s sense of humor at the time. people would photoshop christopher robin’s face on meteors with winnie the pooh preparing to bat the meteor out of the sky. fancomics were drawn. christopher robin became an angry god hell-bent on destroying everything in his path, winnie the pooh became earth’s last hero standing in defiance of the gods. it was insane. all because of this weird, insanely difficult japanese winnie the pooh baseball game.

Here’s a link to the game if anyone wants to give it a try (I fucking hate christopher robin so fucking much)

I still have a bunch of the fanart!

the hanahaki disease is so fascinating to me because there is no documented origin, there is no myth or legend or anything of that sort from which it was derived, there’s no history behind it. one day some fanfic author said “this is a good concept” and it caught on like wildfire and now it’s been integrated into kpop fanfic culture as a pretty prevalent trope, and it’s spreading to other fandoms as well. how fucking cool is that. how cool is it that fanfic authors are creating beauty on such a high magnitude. it blows me the fuck away.

It should be named after a real disease with similar traits, obviously minus the flowers but still, this is a very cool au/concept

It’s actually from a 2009 manga called Hanahaki Otome! Still, I think that’s as far as the trail leads – the mangaka created this concept entirely on their own. And the manga hasn’t even been translated into English iirc so it’s very cool to see how it became so popular with English speaking fans!

So THIS is where that’s coming from. It’s been driving me insane.

i started googling around because what is this suddenly

it’s been showing up even in ships that don’t usually do this sort of thing

i’m used to kylux being kafkaesque psychological horror meets hardcore bsdm, and suddenly general “i murder planets” hux is puking petals

i don’t know how to process this

i’m equally torn between “excuse me shoujo anime would you please control your tropes, leash laws exist for a reason” and “well i mean it’s not like we needed ANOTHER snoke-ships-it-but-only-so-he-can-order-kylo-to-kill-his-bf fic, might as well do flower vomit, why the hell not”

in case you thought i was joking
