He hadn’t wanted things to turn out this way. They shouldn’t have. An expert at dodging, yet how ironic that he hadn’t avoided getting into this mess. There were bitter moments, angry moments. Whole hours and days when he’d have to disappear: to lick his wounds like a dog or he would do something else he’d regret.
Like the right thing wrong thing and break his best friend’s heart.

Riku woke up groggy. Like, really groggy. Worse than a hangover
and not enough sleep combined. Sadly, not something he was unfamiliar
with after college and his first year on the force. The groan that left
his mouth rattled in his skull even as it rasped inside his throat. He
was so fucking thirsty.
“Rikku? Oh my God, Riku. Here, be careful,” exclaimed a hushed
voice. Strong capable hands pressed gently down on his shoulders to keep him
lying down, one coming up to brush gross, oily-feeling bangs off his
forehead.
When was the last time his hair was that long? The
voice was familiar, heart-wrenchingly so, and Riku couldn’t help but
open eyes he’d forgotten were closed. His vision was blurred and fuzzy
and he had to blink away the film for it to clear. Sure enough, the
anxiously-twisted features of Sena Kobayakawa hovered over him. He
looked pale, hair even more a messy than usual, if shorter than he
remembered, and dark purple bruises under his eyes, as though he hadn’t
slept in weeks. The relieved, unadulterated joy had Riku’s heart beating
treacherously too fast in his chest and he had to close his eyes once
more to calm himself down.
“Riku, how are you feeling? Lemme go call the nurse, oh my god,
I’m so glad you’re awake,” Sena babbled, fingers combing through his
greasy hair. He was trembling, and when Riku opened his eyes in confused
shock- at the touch as well as the shaking- tears were glistening in
those weary eyes. “Lemme go- I’m sorry, I just- I’ll be right back,
okay? Don’t… don’t go to sleep, okay?” He sounded almost terrified.
“O-Of c-course,” Riku managed to rasp out, frowning despite himself.
It was a good thing he was lying down, because the next moment, Sena was
leaning over to place a lingering kiss to his forehead. Then, he was
running out the door, shouting in a commanding voice that belied his
wide, desperate eyes for a doctor.
[Midorima Voice] Takao Kazunari??? what a fuckin’ nerd what a— [trips] [hundreds of thousands of photos of Takao spill out of jacket] w-what an asshole i these aren’t mine im just [gathering them up frantically sweating] listen i just listen fuck [thousands of pictures of Takao scatter across the floor] shit fuck im holding them for a friend just listen
(Part 2) feeling he gets around Midorima, something he’s never felt before, so he tries his best to ignore it for the time being. Meanwhile, with Takao being the only person to have bothered to get close and stay close to the eccentric green-haired giant, Midorima realizes his feelings first and pulls Takao aside one day after practice, when Cancer and Scorpio are at the top of the daily horoscope, and Midorima admits “I like you.” Takao doesn’t know what to say for a while, (…)
(Part 3) but it’s like the gears in his head click internally when he hears that, and he knows that, yeah, he likes this big green weirdo too. All he can manage as a response is a small nod of agreement though, and Midorima, relieved that his feelings are returned but also seeing that Takao is still processing things, pulls Takao into a soft hug and kisses the top of his head, before telling him to get the rickshaw ready so they can go home.
(Last part) They might end up holding hands a bit when they walk together after that day, but the rest of their team swears they’re just seeing things.
I love seeing grown humans setting about little creative tasks out of boredom and then looking quietly pleased with themselves, like maybe a middle-aged woman on her train home from work manages to make a tower out of empty coffee creamers and gazes at it proudly for a few seconds.
I love seeing other people make the overblown OOPS I FORGOT SOMETHING performance for no-one that most of us do when we have to turn around in the middle of the pavement.
I love seeing stony-faced people in queues unable to contain a smile when a baby looking over its mother’s shoulder in front of them locks eyes and does that astonished stare.
