I’ve been linked to this so often on facebook I had a surreal moment of wondering what website I was on (in my defense I’m very sick and medicated). Until the confetti streamed over my dash again.
what you have to realize is that there’s a huge number of people who simply do not have a concept of ‘fact’ and ‘not fact’ with regards to information. they genuinely don’t appear to comprehend the idea of objective reality. any narrative that makes them feel better is true, and any narrative that makes them feel worse is false.
you can’t convince them otherwise. sometimes they grow out of it, but you can’t force it. and a lot of them just aren’t equipped to change, for whatever reason.
you can’t get rid of them or exclude them from the dialogue. it’s a basic flaw of human nature, you’d introduce too much terribleness in the process.
and apparently there are enough of them to elect someone like trump, based on ideas like “repeal obamacare because it has obama in the name” and “anything that makes liberals mad is good for america, up to and including becoming a carbon copy of pre-ww2 germany.”
so what do you do about them? how do you keep them from destroying everything in their blind blundering toward a narrative that makes them feel good? well, you have to either get around them or use them. you have to either set up ironclad protections that even a lie-fed mob can’t break in the interval before their attention is grabbed away by a different pedagogue, or you have to resort to a bit of pedagogy yourself.
i’m not sure about the ethics of telling people what they want to hear in order to get them to do the right thing. but i feel pretty sure progressives could do a WAY better job of making the right thing sound attractive than we’re doing right now. we need to step up our marketing game, y’all. we’re not above it. the objective facts are informing us we can’t be if we want to win.
“We are so smart and so right we shouldn’t HAVE to cooperate with those idiots to get our way!” is a ‘fact’ that both progressives and conservatives enthusiastically subscribe to.
Saw this regarding pewdiepie being dropped by disney due to his anti-Semitic jokes recently. And couldn’t have said it better.
This is how disaffected men become radicalised on the internet. This is how 4chan and its ilk became “those places”: because the ‘joking’ became prejudiced circlejerking and that’s how you got hardcore white supremacist websites seeking to recruit from them.
I saw a screenshot of P*wdiepie following an altright blogger on twitter so I’d say this is a likely path for him at this point
ok i am impressed by all of this except starring out the dude’s name. the fuck is the point of that. reblogs don’t show up on search, so it can’t be for that. are you trying to get around someone’s blacklist? or are you just weirdly superstitious about the names of unpleasant people? why do so many people on tumblr do this? it’s bizarre and upsetting.
And there were actually pretty huge differences in how men and women were affected by work. For men the upper healthy limit was pegged around 43.5 hours, whereas for women it was closer to 38.
That difference was made even more dramatic when considering that women are often expected to take care of household, unpaid work in addition to their hourly workload.
Every article talking about this study talks about how bosses can squeeze more labor out of workers, or how workers can squeeze more labor out of themselves, but the reality is that the human brain only has so much capacity to focus on unpleasant tasks, and people generally won’t work more than that without the threat of force (like in manual and service industry jobs where work is easily quantified and workers are being monitored all the time to make sure they don’t slack off; the threat of being fired and losing one’s ability to eat is the threat of force). People in hunter-gatherer societies do about that same amount of work.
The working day isn’t only about productivity, it’s about keeping you busy too, so you’ll have no time do to other things (like study, discover that you can fight back capitalism, organize, things like that).
There would probably be less unemployment if more workers were needed to fill the hours, too
