Interestingly, part of the reason that, until now, Trump has been supported in Russia is due to translation. If you read the Russian language papers like I do, you’ll notice that the Russian translators don’t verbatim copy what Trump says. Instead, they’ll translate what he’s saying into short, professional, statesman-like statements, instead of what he really says. So instead of “I think nuclear weapons should be way down, and reduced, that’s part of it.”, the Russian audience gets a statement that translates back into English as “I think we’ll start with a substantial decrease in nuclear weapons stockpiles.” When Trump calls something “dumb” or “sad”, the Russian press will have him call it “damned”. “Bad hombres” becomes “armed bandits” and so on.

The Russian support for Trump becomes a lot easier to understand when you realize they’re literally not listening to the same person we are.

It’s really weird to see translation add nuance to a politician’s talk rather than take it away, but this makes so much sense.

this is a genuine problem for practically all translators right now.

But some interpreters, like Tsuruta, are concerned that translating the U.S. president too accurately might reflect badly on them. Alina Cincan, a Romanian interpreter and translator, tells Newsweek: “He’s not known for his eloquence nor his diplomacy. Either you translate exactly what he says which means it’ll be repetitive and sometimes gibberish—you’ll be saying ‘tremendous’, ‘very’ or ‘great’ a lot, or you try to make some sense out of it and ‘beautify’ it. If you choose the former, some may judge your interpreting abilities as poor, whereas if you choose the latter, you’ll make him sound better.”

‘Make America big again’? The headache of translating Trump into foreign languages.

“Most of the time, when he speaks he seems not to know quite where he’s going,” Viennot said. “It’s as if he had thematic clouds in his head that he would pick from with no need of a logical thread to link them.”

She is left with a dilemma: either translate Trump exactly as he speaks — and let French readers struggle with the content — or keep the content, but smooth out the style, “so that it is a little bit more intelligible, leading non-English speakers to believe that Trump is an ordinary politician who speaks properly.”

Reading some of the responses to this is hilarious because it’s all people who simply have no concept of how translation works. Their outrage is almost as nonsensical as Trump’s average daily blatherings.

Trump started an anti-immigrant hotline. People are trolling it with tales of aliens.

  • On Wednesday, Trump administration launched the Victims of Immigrant Crime Engagement Office
  • With the launch of VOICE also came the opening of VOICE’s official hotline, which fields calls from those who allege they are the victim of a crime carried out by a immigrant.
  • According to BuzzFeed, since the hotline’s launch, the phone lines have been tied up with calls about undocumented aliens — from outer space.
  • Given that the launch of the hotline coincided with Alien Day, people put two and two together and launched a plan to inundate the hotline with stories of alien abductions. Read more (4/27/17 10 AM)

I love how activists are fucking with this supremely racist idea.

Don’t forget that the Nazis set up similar programs encouraging people to report alleged crimes by Jews.

Trump is a fucking racist and a vulgar affront to everything that is good about America.

There is no “pro-life”. There is just an elaborate misogynist long con to strip women of any rights or gains made in the 20th Century.

This statement is a response to the people who are continually shocked that “pro-life” doesn’t care about babies after they are born, the death penalty, making sure poor people don’t die b/c their health care has been stolen, etc.

Yes, of course “pro-life” doesn’t care about that. Because it’s not about lives and it never was.

They never cared about babies.
The whole baby thing is part of the con.

It’s a con. Stop believing in right wing lies.

It’s not about babies. It was never about babies.
Stop arguing with them about babies.

Never argue with a liar on their own liar terms.

This is why “pro-life” people are also coming after IUDs and the Pill and preventing people from getting life-saving miscarriage care.

So-called “pro-life” is a movement that murders doctors and bombs medical clinics.

And we really need to talk about tactics here, b/c misogyny is winning the propaganda war and has been for decades.

If your personal stance is- I believe everyone should be able to get an abortion but…
Just stop before the but.

Stop qualifying it with “but I never would” or I think it’s wrong" or whatever other “I’m a good person” signal you are trying to throw out.

B/c by doing that, you are ceding ground to misogynist violence. You are letting them win the “is abortion a bad thing” argument.

Abortion is not bad.
And if you support abortion access- All you need to say is “I support abortion access for anyone who wants one”.

We have to reframe the abortion fight as what it really is- a misogynist attack on gender equality.
It’s not about babies at all. It never was.

If you understand that, you will understand why the so called “pro-life” movement behaves as it does.

The rhetoric and behavior does not match up at all.
That should tell you something.

Don’t pay attention to what they say.
Only to what they do.

If you want solid proof of this, check out some of the history of the “pro-life” movement. Before about 1980, almost no evangelical leader would have said abortion was murder. It was only the advancement of women’s rights that made it an issue. It’s been solely about politics, not religion, since the beginning.

A great example of why you don’t have any idea what is happening in the world around you. I don’t generally blog this stuff but, you Should know Time Magazine is not the only media to do this. .

I HAD NO CLUE THIS WAS HAPPENING AND I AM SO ANGRY

american schools teach about other countries’ propaganda, but look at this shit.

Did you guys know that the first Canadian deaths in the war in Afghanistan happened in 2002 when an American pilot dropped a bomb on some Canadian soldiers doing training exercises

killed 4 people and injured 8

Did you know this? Probably not because boy does your country like to brainwash about their fucking military being the greatest and most important and amazing fucking thing

Americans, we get more news about your country than you do, because gosh diddly darn does your country ever like to hide things from you and keep you stupid.

The misinformation and ignorance of the American public is manufactured and deliberate as a means of social control

The bull whose testes get rubbed for luck?

Symbolic?

…Ok but Fearless Girl is literally a marketing ploy and the Charging Bull was meant to symbolize American perseverance ABC excellence without regard for gender. Like. He has a point.

I recommend this read to understand the full scope of the situation:

‘Seriously, The Guy Has a Point’

No really read it because what is being said has nothing do with gender but rather about the fact that the bull was created by an guerrilla artist who put it there with out permission and it stayed because the people loved it and the girl who was created as marketing ploy by a trillion dollar company.

And it was commissioned to be presented on the first anniversary of State Street Global’s “Gender Diversity Index” fund, which has the following NASDAQ ticker symbol: SHE. And finally, along with Fearless Girl is a bronze plaque that reads:

Know the power of women in leadership. SHE makes a difference.

Note it’s not She makes a difference, it’s SHE makes a difference. It’s not referring to the girl; it’s referring to the NASDAQ symbol

Fearless Girl also changes the meaning of Charging Bull. Instead of being a symbol of “the strength and power of the American people” as Di Modica intended, it’s now seen as an aggressive threat to women and girls — a symbol of patriarchal oppression.

In effect, Fearless Girl has appropriated the strength and power of Charging Bull. Of course Di Modica is outraged by that. A global investment firm has used a global advertising firm to create a faux work of guerrilla art to subvert and change the meaning of his actual work of guerrilla art. That would piss off any artist.

He wasn’t as flagrantly bad as Trump, but let’s not completely rehabilitate George W. Bush into a nice old man who likes to paint and can’t handle his raincoat, okay?

-signed, someone over thirty

dubya looks cutesy-pie now, but plz know he was the trump prequel, an utter buffoon and public embarrassment who lost the popular vote and stoked the ugliest brand of patriotism to bring us to a war with no purpose but personal and crony profit. he was a trump test run and worked magnificently

plz also know he is test running how we are expected to treat trump in retirement, as a delightful buffoon who wasn’t responsible

he is absolutely a buffoon

but he also created a war of no purpose (thus opening the way for future presidents to declare war personally, needing no congressional approval or oversight)

make fun of him because he is evil and deserves mockery, not because he’s just an adorbs old man who seems cutely befuddled

And don’t forget how he let a shit ton of Black people die or lose everything when Hurricane Katrina happened

That global gag rule that Trump just signed in? Yeah, W reinstated it after Clinton scrapped it, and killed thousands of women worldwide because of ir.

Tried to pass a constitutional amendment to “protect marriage” from same sex couples.

I was a senior in college for the 2000 election clusterfuck. That was a corrupt election. Everybody knew it. It was the first time I saw and heard suspicion that our democracy was inevitably failing.

W treated 9/11 as an opportunity to continue his daddy’s failed project of gaining a foothold in the middle east for the purpose of controlling oil exports. Note that after 9/11 the US went to war in Afghanistan, yes, and went after the Taliban, but W’s legacy was the war in IRAQ and the absolute catastrophe that created afterSaddam Hussein was killed (cue: power vacuum because the cowboy – though an evil shit cowboy – had left town. In roll more radical groups). Ppl older than 30 might remember the theatrics of the UNSC presentation in 2003 where Colin Powell held up a little clear vial of OMG WHITE POWDER as evidence that Iraq had enormous stockpiles of WMDs (that bullshit was fake, and Powell later regretted that he made the case to the UNSC that turned out to be wrong about WMDs in Iraq. Powell insisted that the whole cabinet had no idea they were so gravely mistaken over the presence of WMDs. Riiiiiight.)

Also W’s legacy: the Patriot Act, passed a month or so after 9/11. It legalized gross violations of citizens’ privacy and included shit like allowing the FBI free rein to search phone and electronic and financial records, and allows federal agents to search and seize if they had any suspicion of terroristic activities or connections to such. It also allowed for the indefinite detention of any non-citizen suspected of terrorism or anyone who seemed like they might commit terrorism IN THE FUTURE. We are going to see this again. I repeat: WE ARE GOING TO SEE THIS AGAIN. Suspension of basic civil liberties has already happened in the US and for good reasons, the Trump admin will say. There’s precedent now for that shit.

Also W’s legacy: instantiating and legalizing systematic TORTURE as a practice in interrogating prisoners. Think “alt-right” is an evil euphemism for Nazis? My generation actually got used to the term created by the GWB admin – “enhanced interrogation techniques” – to the point that honestly? It was easy to pretend it just. Wasn’t. Fucking. Happening. And it wasn’t – not on US soil. Because the W admin also decided to torture detainees at black sites overseas in countries where torture was legal (black sites that Trump has already moved to reopen). Detainees were – and will continue to be – beaten, starved, waterboarded, subjected to electric shock, sexually assaulted, et al. W backed away from treaties with the Hague international criminal court that could have tried these fucks for war crimes. OH AND DON’Tforget that time that W signed off on an act that allowed the US to INVADE THE GODDAMN HAGUE if ANY American citizens ended up there on trial for said crimes. He made us non-accountable for war crimes. I repeat: he made us non-accountable for war crimes.

The team of W, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, and Rice? Evil. Mother. Fuckers.

Also never forget that time that a massive hurricane rolled in from the Gulf of Mexico and wrecked New Orleans and surrounding areas to the point that ppl were huddled on the roofs of their houses while actual bodies floated by in the Katrina floodwater. FEMA wasted a fuck ton of time and money and oversaw the essential displacement of a massive number of poor black residents of New Orleans who never recovered.

Hurricane Katrina wrecked thousands of lives on August 29, 2005. What was W doing that day? EATING BIRTHDAY CAKE WITH JOHN “I LOOK LIKE A GOOD REPUB NOW COMPARED TO ALL THESE NAZIS” MCCAIN. The photo was on the WH web page and other photos were time-stamped to show that these assholes were laughing and making silly faces over birthday cake AFTER they were already briefed on the Katrina devastation.

There would be no Donald Trump if there hadn’t been a W. W was not a dumbass, he was not a goofy, befuddled bumbler. He was smart in that pedestrian kind of way where he knew exactly when and how to play dumb, to roll out that Texas accent and plaster that revolting “I feel the pain and fear all of you are feeling, I’m sad too” wrinkle-browed look on his face. Most people fell for it. I know there were times – especially in my early 20s – that I did. He manipulated people into fear and complacency by faking empathy and humility and meanwhile developing and signing off on some really truly evil legislation.

The almost manic euphoria that swept so much of the US when Obama was elected? Part of it was relief: W, the monster of the west, was gone and we knew he wasn’t going to replaced by another version of himself in McCain.

Call me melodramatic if you want but honestly NONE of the terrifying stuff that’s happening right now could ever have happened were it not for the path cut (slashed, burned, bulldozed) by George W. Bush.

Stop romanticizing this fuckhead!!!!

Also it bothers me when people want to blame Cheney for everything, like W was just a puppet with no clue what was happening who just wanted to play golf.

He was COMPLICIT, he KNEW, it was his JOB to know, he is CULPABLE for everything. No free passes, he was president, it’s all his responsibility.

Ding ding ding. don’t do this to trump either, in the far future, if we’re still alive.

Women have heard this argument again and again, and we have remained the reliable base of a party that has elected and elevated to positions of greater power anti-choice Democrats including Harry Reid, Joe Biden, Tim Kaine, and Bob Casey. In fact, it’s hard not to feel that it’s because of the dedication of women, and particularly women of color, to the Democratic Party — where else are they going to go? — that party leaders feel freer to take them for granted and trade their fundamental rights in obsessive pursuit of the great white male. This is how Dems always imagine that they can make inroads in red states. It’s third-way centrist bullshit.
… In the midst of one of the most activated, energized, ground-up movements in modern Democratic political history — where the energy is coming from women who remain underrepresented in state and federal legislatures — the Unity Tour, with its two men making pronouncements about what the party should do next, felt exceedingly out of touch. And the dynamic — the women doing the labor of organizing and protesting and campaigning, knocking on doors and making calls and sending postcards, while guys speak from the microphones about the need to compromise on their rights — is depressingly retro.

entitledrichpeople:

People arguing that the poor shouldn’t have kids and that benefits should be cut from kids in families with “too many kids” are being super obvious that they don’t think of poor people as fully human.  And also that they’re into genocide (it’s not like we live in a world where poverty, deprivation, and lack of access to resources is evenly distributed across all racial/ethnic groups and we all fucking know that).

Rights like being able to have a family, to raise children, to continue our families and cultures are basic parts of human rights that people should be able to choose to engage in (or not, if that’s their preference, but they shouldn’t be coerced not to).

Banning someone from having kids or starting a family or coercing them not to is an incredibly cruel thing to do to someone.  And that’s what people are doing when they suggest poor people shouldn’t have kids.  Rich people and classist assholes act like the choice is between having kids in poverty or having kids not in poverty and that’s just not how things go in reality.  Most people born in poverty will remain in poverty or close to it.  The choice to have kids and start a family outside of poverty is one denied to most people.

And don’t concern troll about the welfare of poor kids if you’re trying to cut their food, housing, education, etc. and if you see them as garbage drains on society.  Concern for poor children is totally fucking unrelated to ruling class desires to control poor people and to victim blame poor people for poverty.

Poor people having kids isn’t what creates poverty, poverty is the result of systematic exploitation and a fucked up inhumane system.  Kids born to the poor are as valuable and human as any other child, and poor people have as much rights to things like having a family as any other human being.

the Big Secret is that lifting people out of poverty is actually cheaper than keeping them poor. living wages invigorate the economy. paying for food and housing for the poorest among us, no questions asked, gets them off welfare and back into the job market much faster. the bureaucracy designed to weed out the ‘undeserving’ costs arguably more than the benefits paid out, and having to reapply and jump through hoops continually, getting their food and medicine randomly cut off, makes people on benefits far less able to recover and go back to work. lack of health care costs the country billions more than universal health care would cost; it’s just that the cost of so many sick people is easier to hide in the statistics.

it’s not about money. it’s about power.

or rather, it’s about oligarchs tricking citizens into spending their own money to keep their neighbors poor. it isn’t the rich who subsidize corporations who pay below living wage. it’s you. it’s your taxes that are paying for cheeto hitler to take multi-million dollar vacations every damn weekend while he and his billionaire cronies promise you that cutting school lunch will make you more secure. it won’t. you’re next.
