So the subplot of Holes is that Kate Barlow deals with the politically-sanctioned execution of her black boyfriend—who unlawfully kissed a white woman who was in love with him!!!—by becoming a serial killer who targets racist/sexist white dudes who harassed her, were rejected, then went after her boyfriend as revenge from the depths of the “friend zone”.
Go off Louis Sachar, let em know!
Don’t forget the main plot was a damning satire of the brokenness and inherent racism of the American justice and prison systems! Louis Sachar does not fuck about
It always fuck me up that older people don’t understand how this story is as essential to most american children as Gone with the Wind or Mary Poppins was.
unironically, this is one of the best books/movies for young people that exists
Kissing Kate Did Nothing Wrong
And the technical writing of Holes is perfect. Like, it’s one of the most technically-perfect books ever written. Basically any plotting or pacing or characterization issue you’re having, read Holes and really study how Sachar did it. THE LIZARDS! THE LIZARDS.
the twisty prophecies! the lizards! the lipstick! the humor! this book doesn’t play. a true classic.
I can’t even tell you how excited I was that they turned this book into a movie and it was good
I literally have absolutely no complaints with the movie at all. Once, my friend and I did comparisons from the book and the movie, and we found the only major difference was the fact that Stanley wasn’t heavy set when he arrived at the camp in the movie. The majority of the script is raw quotations from the book. This is my favorite book to movie adaptation and it did everything Percy Jackson, Inkheart, and The Golden Compass didn’t.
And the only reason Stanely wasn’t heavy set was because in the book he loses tons of weight and eventually ends up being almost thin. The director said he didn’t want to force an adolescent boy to lose weight on such a quick filming schedule, and L’bouf’s audition was so spot on, that they decided to go with a thinner Stanely from the beginning
And I’ll support directors actually giving a crap about their actor’s health.
Somebody had to actually dig the holes in the movie ‘Holes’.
that’s what interns are for
Builds character
His name is Tim Everett.
He plotted all of the holes in “Holes” using 3D modeling. He also supervised the production of all the lizards in the same movie.
He built the storm in “The Perfect Storm” and now he’s the Hollywood go-to guy for water effects. The whirlpool in Pirates of the Caribbean? Tim fucking Everett. They asked for him by name.
He’s the man who taught me how to model mountains and light caves. He showed me how to frame a scene in classical 3-field vignetting. He is a hard ass when it comes to lazy work, and he is one of the most amazing artists I have ever had the pleasure to present my work to.
That someone believes some poor intern had to dig all those holes is a testament to his work. Tim Everett is an environmental guru.
“so what if that book had a bad movie adaptation? it’s impossible to make a completely satisfying movie version of a book, stop complaining!”
Wasn’t he fat tho
They considered letting Shia Lebeouf put on pounds before the filming, and lose them throughout the film, but that would have been extremely unhealthy, especially for an actor his age, so they decided to cut that aspect out.
