Good thing I ain’t no lady.

Here’s another one – http://fanlore.org/wiki/The_Cassandra_Claire_Plagiarism_Debacle

You’ll note that this took place in 2001.

The fact that this woman continues to have professional success is proof that there is no justice in the universe.

Trotting all this out again in light of her newest plagarism bullshit :))) It’s shit like this that keeps me ALIVE and living.

omg, sometimes I go a long time between re-reading and I somehow FORGET the dept of the batshit WTAF of the Msscribe sockpuppet saga, like HOW DO I FORGET, it is INCREDIBLE

Oh my god THERE’S NEW CASSIE CLARE PLAGIARISM SHIT GOING DOWN? SOMEBODY LINK ME

fandom problems

  • indie creators getting railed for “cringy” fandoms and people saying “i hope it doesnt get popular’, hurting their livelihood and income – when mainstream games don’t get this same treatment, and wouldn’t be hurt as bad
  • if an adult male character is sexualized then it’s instantly “cringy” and “onceler all over again”, while nobody bats an eye at sexualized anime japanese school girls
  • women/lgbt/minority creators being subjected to witchhunts for messing up once, meanwhile white guy lets players can make racist and ableist jokes but “im sure theyre actually good people”

its really disheartening to me when i see teen girls specifically being violently shit on for reacting to/digesting media made for marginalized people in a way that isn’t completely socially sensitive or acceptable.

girls between the ages of 10-15 are really fucking impressionable and when they find an outlet to express their enjoyment for something that’s considered “taboo” like two dudes or two ladies kissing each other or a trans lady and a trans man finding solace in one anothers company or whatever fucking combination you can come up with, dont fucking shit down their throats for not reacting to or enjoying it in a way that you’d expect of a much older, much more socially aware adult.

children are children. you can’t yell at them for not understanding social cues that they have not yet had the chance to learn about. im so tired of seeing teen girls being shit on for being EXCITED about gay media. i’m so tired of seeing their excitement being called “fetishizing.” THEYRE FUCKING TEENAGERS YOU SKIDMARK WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM THEM

give them time to learn!! fuck!! give them time to process and enjoy the media in ways that make sense to them, and like, GENTLY correct them if something they do goes out of bounds, but do not fucking lambast them for their enthusiasm, even when it’s not expressed in a particularly “good” way, whatever “good” might mean to you, however arbitrary that word is.

people learn over time. i know for fucking sure that you didnt come out of the womb knowing all there is to know about the history of the struggles of LGBT people and how you should behave once you have that knowledge. i sure as shit didnt.

im also tired of seeing the word “gross” be applied to teen girls who are enjoying lgbt media. im tired of them being shoved into a corner of dirty and wrong and eye roll worthy just bc they aren’t behaving in a very specific way.

theres nothing WRONG with wanting people to do better, please don’t misquote me on this. there’s nothing wrong with wanting to help people become more sensitive and more thoughtful abt the way they react to lgbt media and what they produce etc etc but like good fucking lord dont come at me with the word “faghag” in regards to a teen girl and expect me to give even the slightest shit about anything you have to say

signed, a nb, queer artist who produces lgbt media!!!

Side effects may include:

  • Making friends all over the world and coming to terms with the fact that you might only meet half of them, ever, if you’re lucky
  • Occasional-to-frequent sleep-deprivation because the words finally started flowing two hours after you were supposed to be asleep
  • Getting into arguments with strangers about which fictional characters should kiss
  • Realizing you are working through your own feelings about events from your own life by imagining your favorite fictional characters going through the same things
  • Researching the sorts of things that make you worry you’ll end up on an FBI watchlist
  • Watching pornography only to help yourself visualize specific positions/acts
  • Crying

a lot of characters that get called villains are actually on this sort of spectrum from anti-hero to outright evil, and somewhere closer to anti-hero is my favorite dumbass, the tantrum baby who lacks belief or understanding of the inherent value of human life. he’s just an entitled dingus with more power than he deserves, hugely overreacting to minor slights because he doesn’t know how to deal with having his feelings hurt. so, like, if you know how to handle him he actually seems like a fun dude and he enters that grey area of ‘villains we hang out with now like some kind of weird murder uncle’. but all it takes is one person being kind of a dick and haha whoops he’s. he’s a bad guy. bonus points if the tantrum baby in question is also fiercely loyal, once that loyalty has been earned, inevitably saddling some poor cinnamon roll with the world’s most excessive bodyguard.

Hhahaha yes my FAVORITE.  See:

While many people think fanfiction is about inserting sex into texts (like Tolkien’s) where it doesn’t belong, Brancher sees it differently: “I was desperate to read about sex that included great friendship; I was repurposing Tolkien’s text in order to do that. It wasn’t that friendship needed to be sexualized, it was that erotica needed to be … friendship-ized.” Many fanfiction writers write about sex in conjunction with beloved texts and characters not because they think those texts are incomplete, but because they’re looking for stories where sex is profound and meaningful. This is part of what makes fan fiction different from pornography: unlike pornography, fanfic features characters we already care deeply about, and who tend to already have long-standing and complex relationships with each other. It’s a genre of sexual subjectification: the very opposite of objectification. It’s benefits with friendship.

I recall being in a conversation with a gatekeeper once (the sort of “monosexual is a homophobic term!” “MOGWAI means kinky people count as queer!” “asexuals don’t belong in the queer community!” type of asshole) and they said of a fictional character: “He’s definitely gay.  Totally gay.  Maybe bisexual.  Queer at the very least.”

That’s when it clicked for me: Gatekeepers honestly think that any sexuality beyond straight and gay is just Gay Lite.  Bisexual is half-gay, asexuality is, like, 0.05 percent gay, and just identifying as “queer” is a quarter-gay, maybe.

This is why they lose their shit so badly whenever someone thinks a character is bisexual and not gay, why they accuse others of erasing their representation.  A bisexual is just half a lesbian, so how dare you try and water down our portrayal in the media!  Asexuals are such Lite Gays that they might as well be straight, so don’t you dare take away my representation with your ace headcanons!

Never mind if the source material itself is ambiguous.  If it’s not gay or lesbian, it’s not real representation.  If you don’t want real representation, you’re siding with the straights.

It’s such a pathetic and limited way of looking at the world.  I’d feel sorry for them if they weren’t such jerks.

Some do this in relation to trans headcanons as well. They’ll go into one hell of a performative outrage against TERFs and other assorted bigoted shits… and then have a fucking meltdown when a young trans man on this site says ‘I headcanon this character as a demisexual trans boy’. This person got dogpiled by dozens of the usual suspects involved in the most virulent anti a-spec discourse, all of them shouting ‘she’s a lesbian!’, ‘lesbian-only!!!!’ The fact that all of this was over headcanons about the goddamn moon in the sky just made me cross myself and go ‘these people are the future of the community? I fucking weep for it, then.’ Honestly, someone can post all they want about how ‘TERFs are Bad’. it becomes mere performative drivel when one engages in pretty damned TERFy bullshit in turn.

Also, he’re as example of this particular dogpiling in action re: a bisexual headcanon. Notice, again, the usual suspects involved and the rejection of any headcanon other than gay. But sure, sure, m-spec people and a-spec people and trans and nonbinary and agender people are ~*~totally valid~*~ and other meaningless buzz-words tossed round like candy for placation. Valid until any of the aforementioned groups want to work at seeing themselves represented by identifying with a character and having personal headcanons for a character whose sexuality and gender are never black-on-white stated in a give canon
