Oooo good question anon! I will try to answer this as best I can!
So in American culture, the most common gay male stereotype is a man who is extremely feminine. This is probably because of our heteronormative culture — if a man enjoys receiving gay sex, then this makes him “like a woman”. But in Japan, the most common gay male stereotype is a man who is extremely masculine. I don’t know why this is the stereotype, but perhaps it has to do with this “obsession with the masculine” being a sign of also wanting masculine/male partners.
So, when Kirishima calls everything good and honorable “manly”, especially anything done by his male classmates, and when he does this all the time… To a Japanese person, this might come off as being, well, pretty fucking gay. A sign that he wants male partners and not female partners. Which leads me to my next point.
Probably the most telling sign of Kirishima’s possible LGBT status is in his character page. This is in Volume 3 of the manga. In the official English translation, it says that his favorite things are “hard-liners” and “tough guys”.
…… And, the ‘tough guys’ is not a mistranslation. At least, not entirely. If anything, it doesn’t even begin to cover just how fucking gay it actually is.
In the original Japanese text, it says here that one of Kirishima’s favorite things is “Kouha” (硬派), literally “the hard school”. This was a youth subculture in the Meiji Era (1868-1912 for reference), categorized by male students who dressed in tough clothing and honored the masculine so much that they “engaged in male-male sexuality since they believed that relationships with females would feminize them and make them ‘soft’.”
Y’all. I couldn’t make this up if I tried.
So there you have it! That’s how, in Japanese culture, Kirishima might be gay-coded. This is what I know on the matter, but I am no expert, so if anyone else has additions or corrections, please feel free to leave a reply to this post!
fellas, is it gay to fight off villains side by side with your bro, offering to be an unwavering horse for him to ride, wearing couples Halloween costumes with him, nursing him back to health when he is sick, choosing him over other classmates to be a tutor, going on multiple study dates with him, helping him unpack his dorm just to be close to him, sparring with him to grow in strength together, shedding tears at the thought of losing him, being the one and only person able to take him by the hand, thinking of him first in life-threatening times of need, using his words of encouragement as inspiration that leads to tremendous breakthroughs in physical ability and self esteem, worrying about his emotional health when he is struggling, staying by his side through thick and thin, offering him unconditional mutual support and respect? I mean that’s basically falling in love with another man 🤔🤔
it depends, in large part, to how much you read into bakugou’s reactions to various situations and people. it’s taken as given that bakugou has never had real peers before entering ua (midoriya and their changing circumstances in relation to one another notwithstanding). so while we’ve seen bakugou with his cronies in the earlier chapters and flashbacks (the kid with the wings, the kid with the extendable fingers), ua is really the first opportunity he has to meet people he is able to recognize as equals. he has various responses to those people, initially— he feels inadequate compared to todoroki, he’s threatened by midoriya’s very existence, he responds with hostility to kaminari’s teasing and asui’s assessments. his default mode is to disregard others, or to respond to them with derision and anger. but this is just an initial matter. over time, his relationships with every single one of his classmates has changed considerably— not just in how he treats them, but in how they see him in turn. and i think that progression is exemplified by his relationship with kirishima.
to break things down a little more—
bakugou and kirishima end up together when the class is split up at usj. kirishima explicitly reachesan epiphany about bakugou here— he looks beneath the surface, and reads bakugou’s lack of concern for his classmates as confidence in their abilities. from there, he decides that he’s willing to go along with bakugou’s plan. and i think this is also where kirishima learns to read bakugou, or at least learns that how bakugou comes across and what’s actually motivating him might be quite different. this is important, because throughout the series kirishima is able to sympathize with or understand bakugou at points where other people don’t really bother to try.
during the sports festival, bakugou agrees to build a team with kirishima. this is pretty pivotal, because up until this point we’ve only ever seen bakugou react viscerally and negatively to the idea of help. of course, according to the rules of the game, he had to form a team. but kirishima is someone he knows, and who’s quirk he probably actually remembers. after usj, kirishima at least registers on bakugou’s radar. this might seem like the bare minimum of human decency, but remember that bakugou was surrounded by classmates whose names he barely knew. he knows kirishima’s name and respects his strength— a pretty pivotal distinction, coming from bakugou.
it’s made clear in the tournament portion of the sports festival that bakugou shows respect to others by giving his all when he faces them in battle. this is his side of his battle with uraraka, and why he reacts so violently when todoroki doesn’t use his full power against him. bakugou offers this same level of respect to kirishima, facing him with everything he has and developing a strategy unique to defeating him. so at this point, bakugou at the very least respect kirishima.
in between the sports festival and the training camp arc, there are a bunch of little moments that show bakugou and kirishima have kept up contact. kirishima invites bakugou along on class outings (even if bakugou doesn’t agree to go), and kirishima asks bakugou to tutor him, and deliberately asks in a way he knows bakugou won’t say no to.
this whole time, bakugou is simultaneously softening towards his classmates and building up a lot of resentment about himself and his own perceived lack of growth. he’s more natural when his classmates tease him, he and todoroki have a more amiable relationship, etc. but he’s festering with resentment and doubt this entire time, and i think that’s pivotal to reading his character.
during the training camp arc, kirisihima freaks out when he realizes bakugou is the villains’ target. he’d probably be similarly affronted if any of his other friends were threatened, given his backstory, but bakugou does seem to be someone particularly important to him. he takes his inability to protect bakugou as an indictment of his own character, to the point where he works with todoroki to engineer an illegal rescue operation.
the hideout raid/kamino ward arc is probably the defining bakushima moment in canon, up to this point, but it’s also the part of canon that best addresses your question. what does bakugou think of kirishima? he sees kirishima as an equal. as far as we know, he hasn’t given that distinction to anyone else, ever. midoriya knows bakugou won’t respond to him as an equal, and also dismisses putting yaoyorozu or iida in that role. he also doesn’t ask it of todoroki, who ostensibly has a good relationship with bakugou at this point. kirishima is explicitly called out, by the most observant character in the series (and also the character who has observed bakugou for his entire life), as the one person who has built an equal relationship with bakugou. a relationship that allows for challenges and teasing, but also camaraderie and mutual respect. this is like, pivotally important. we do not have on-the-page evidence of bakugou giving that level of respect and care to anyone else.
bakugou takes kirishima’s hand, and that’s a turning point in an arc that could have turned out very differently otherwise.
during the license exam arc, kirishima chases after bakugou (along with kaminari), and they both look specifically happy to be fighting side by side. their teamwork is old hat, by this point. they’re comfortable around each other and work well together, in various combinations of larger teams. this arc may have been the last time we’ve seen bakugou smile that triumphantly? and it’s with kirishima by his side, for what that’s worth. kirishima, kaminari and bakugou are all friends by this point, even if bakugou still isn’t particularly effusive.
and then, during the internship arc, which is specifically kirishima-focused, we see kirishima airing his own insecurities to a group of the 1a boys. (and bakugou is casually and comfortably among them! they’re in a dorm, if he was just tolerating their presence in class he could go up to his room and avoid spending any more time with them. but he doesn’t.) when kirishima voices these insecurities, bakugou gets angry not at him, but on his behalf. he tells kirishima how he views kirishima’s specific strength, and again expresses how much he respects kirishima. this is a big deal for bakugou, who has only ever reacted to others’ strength with challenge or insecurity, before. he admires kirishima’s strength without being threatened by it— not because kirishima isn’t strong enough to be a threat, but because their relationship has so many other layers and a level of comfort, at this point.
anyway, there’s probably a lot i’m forgetting, here. but the takeaway is that bakugou and kirishima’s relationship as equals and friends has been very deliberately built up and carefully tracked throughout the series. they both have important relationships outside of each other, but it’s clear that their development hinges on each other in many ways, too. bakugou has expressed care and concern over kirishima in ways he hasn’t for basically anyone else (other than all might). he cares about how kirishima views himself, because he has deigned to see kirishima as an equal. and that’s pretty significant.
because bakugou doesn’t respond typically to people, it can be hard to read his reactions for what they are. but the series is deliberate and careful about how bakugou categorizes people and what they mean to him. his own emotional language is consistent, if not particularly typical. so through that lense, kirishima’s importance to him is stated pretty clearly. even if he doesn’t show affection or care in the same way as other people, he still expresses those emotions. and kirishima has been set up as a character who knows how read bakugou’s reactions and expressions of emotion.
it’s easy enough, from there, to bridge the gaps and see bakugou’s feelings however you wish. but he definitely doesn’t just tolerate kirishima. it’s a relationship meant to specifically illustrate how differently bakugou is able to see and treat people now that he’s changed as much as he has.
I love Midoriya and Kirishima’s friendship. I know their relationship isn’t prominent, but they have a healthy and solid friendship that’s often overlooked. I don’t have a specific theory on it, but I’ll talk about it.
Midoriya and Kirishima have had a decent relationship from the start.
While Midoriya is against Bakugou during the Heroes vs.Villains exercise, Kirishima is concerned for Midoriya’s well-being.
Even though running away isn’t manly to Kirishima, Kirishima understands why Midoriya has to run away while fighting against Bakugou.
Kirishima really starts to respect Midoriya after he beats Bakugou during the Heroes vs. Villains exercise. Kirishima is one of the first classmates besides Iida and Uraraka to befriend Midoriya.
Kirishima thinks so highly of Midoriya that he’s fine with Midoriya being student council class president even after it’s proven Iida should be class president.
Midoriya and Kirishima both like each other’s Quirks and find each other’s Quirks to be very useful.
Kirishima keeps a watchful eye on Midoriya after All Might’s Fight with noumu.
And even runs over to make sure Midoriya is okay even though Kirishima should be heading out of the USJ right now.
Kirishima tries to protect Midoriya when it looks like Todoroki is being hostile towards Kirishima before the Sports Festival.
Not only does Kirishima think highly of Midoriya, but Midoriya thinks highly of Kirishima as well. Midoriya thinks Kirishima is very cool.
Kirishima understands the pain Midoriya feels for not being able to reach out and rescue Bakugou. The two of them relate to not being able to do anything to help Bakugou.
Kirishima uses this understanding to successfully convince Midoriya to help him rescue Bakugou.
Midoriya and Kirishima are such good pals, that Kirishima gives Midoriya advice on how to act like a thug. XD
Kirishima notices that Midoriya’s mumbling habit has toned down lately and makes an observation when the habit suddenly comes back
Midoriya understands Kirishima, particularly his relationship with Bakugou, well enough that he uses that understanding to rescue Bakugou. He knows Kirishima would be the only one who can reach out and rescue Bakugou. He understands how important Kirishima is.
Midoriya’s understanding of Bakugou and Kirishima is correct. Kirishima can reach out to rescue Bakugou.
They’re both pretty good friends throughout the series even though the relationship isn’t a huge deal. It’s very mutual, nice, simple, and drama-free.
They get a lot of meaningful interactions during the Internship Arc. I’d argue their relationship gets a lot of development and importance. Kirishima is Midoriya’s number one supporter during that arc and loves how pumped up Midoriya has been.
As I said before, Kirishima is such a Midoriya supporter and raises Midoriya’s spirits.
They work really well together.
Also, Midoriya singles out Kirishima as someone he could share his problems with specifically. He specifically says he can’t talk to “Kirishima and the others” about his problems, implying Kirishima would be one of the first people Midoriya would turn to in order to talk about his issues.
Midoriya and Kirishima both have heroic spirits. They both want to help people and both can relate to not being able to help others. They can certainly bond over that.
Their friendship makes sense since they both have similar values and are nice people. They both look up to each other and both work well together. They did well together while rescuing Bakugou and breaking down walls.
I hope Midoriya and Kirishima talk more and team up more. They’ll probably both face hardships, fight tough bad guys, and get injured during the Internship Arc, and that will help them grow and bond together. That’s the closest thing I have to a theory on their relationship.
(I have such a love/hate relationship with this Ask. I loved making it, but when I was done making a long answer to this ask, I accidentally deleted my answer and had to redo the whole LONG answer again. I was tempted to just give up answering this Ask. Thank god I finished it.)

Please can we talk about how Todoroki and Midoriya’s relationship evolved during all these chapters? They become so close and have such amazing bond, but do you remember how all this started and how was changing?
Please be careful it will have many spoilers from manga. And also will be suuuuuper long. >/////////< (tho there will be many pics ;)) so sorry in advance. 😀
– The first important event between them was when Todoroki said he sees Midoriya as his rival and want to beat him, even if he thought he is stronger than him…
– Midoriya was aware of this that Todoroki is stronger than him but recognized all his motifs and respected him as his rival and promised to not disappoint him as rival and go with all his might.
– What interesting Todoroki even stayed that he is not here to make friends and all…
but look how far from there they come, like even on the same day that he said this to Midoriya, he confessed him very deep and hard secrets about his family life…
About his problems with father, his tragic past, truth about mother and all reasons why he is not using his fire powers… And it was really deep scars of Todoroki yet he decide to say this to Midoriya, who for now was just his classmate, someone he still didn’t know too much, yet he trusted him to say all this… Like he felt he is someone who he can trust.
– Midoriya was listening this carefully and really felt much for Todoroki, that much he even opposed Todorki’s father. And it is even more meaningful taking the fact Midoriya was a little scared of Endeavor. He can be intimidating but even this didn’t stop Midoriya to try to protect Todoroki.
– And then we have Todoroki and Midoriya’s battle on school festival which is like turinng point for Todoroki’s life and in their relationship.
-Midoriya noticed immediately something is off and no matter how big cost it had for him… he wanted to help Todoroki. In a way losing or winning wasn’t that important… What was important: making Todoroki free from demons of his past.
Midoriya really was doing all his best and was so so so so
determined and also super observant for Todoroki’s behavior and feelings.
– What’s the most important he said words that changed for good Todoroki’s thinking and give him new path and also break from past demons….
It was such simple words… Yet such important ones. Todoroki was waiting for them all his life… Words that show him he can be himself. Words that gave him new strength and freedom… “They are your powers…”
It was Midoriya who gave Todoroki power to be finally able to move forward…
– Todoroki was finally able to accept himself and his own powers… and Midoriya was fascinated by this too.
– In the end it was Todoroki who won and Midoriya who lost this battle but it wasn’t the most important and Todoroki knew this, he was grateful to Midoriya and even said this…
HE was aware of how important to his evolution was Midoriya and felt that something very important is happening.
– There was still kind of long road before Todoroki to deal with but it was Midoriya who helped him to start this and become crucial factor for his change.
– Thanks to Midoriya, Todoroki was brave enough to meet his mother after all these years and after all this pain that was between them..
In a way, thanks to Midoriya he really was able to start his life anew…
– Midoriya wanted to help him no matter what… even if the cost was big…
He wanted to use this festival after all as occasion to become known in world… but as he was painfully aware of this he didn’t do this…
He gave his all to help Todoroki instead, even All Might noticed this..
Midoriya knew how much Todoroki’s suffering so he really did all what he could to free him, from his demons…
Midoriya has after this crucial battle scars on his hands… which seems so symbolic, shows how much he did to save his friend. He really was in such bad shape after all this fight….
– Midoriya is really a hero
Todoroki’s hero 🙂
for who he was waiting all his life…
– Even look how this sunshine cutie was supporting Todoroki, just after his own defeat.
– After this fight these two really fast became very close, which is not that surprising seeing how intense and emotional, life-changing moment it was for both of them…
And remember how Todoroki said not long ago he didn’t come here to make friends… see, he changed his opinion very fast hahaha. 😉
He called Midoriya his friend, and knowing how reserved Todorki can be it really means a lot… Especially in what situation he did this. It was not long ago after events of school festival when Midoriya was in danger… And of course Todoroki rushed to his rescue. 😀
It also very significant how he knew Midoriya’s in danger. Thanks to phone message. And haha it gives such cute information they shared their phone numbers and maybe even send each other from time to time some cute messages. 😉 . But what is more important it is that Midoriya’s send this message to all his contacts, but it was Todoroki who came to his rescue first, and also it was him who understand what such empty message means. He knows him so much he was able to say he is in pinch and rushed as fats as he could to help him. 😀 such protective boyfriend. Awww. 😀
– What also prove their great bond is how great partners and powerful duo they can be. They really understand each other a lot. Being on the same time so different.
They trust each other so much and also support themselves.
– from funny note Midoriya also became some kind of calming waifu for Todoroki. 😉 Look how he tries to calm him down when he gets annoyed by others. 😉
– They are really such cute friends, Midoriya even always remember to invite Todoroki when he and his other friends go to some funny places.
– Todoroki became also very observant towards Midoriya…
being able to notice his worries and trying to help him.
When Midoriya was worried about Kouta, Todorki calmly and with patience listened him and gave long and the best advice he could. He didn’t brush him over, it was important for Midoriya so for him too.
They talked so long that in a way they really werelike in their own world, that much they forgot to world matters and forgot they should prepare the meal. 😉
It is very meaningful how patient and caring Todoroki became towards Midoriya. He really has such soft side towards him (which is not surprising after all Midoriya is such cutie pie :D). And it is kind of interesting how clam and soft he became towards him when not long ago he had kind of harsher way of speaking him like he was calling him “brat” and was saying he is “Spouting garbage”.:D Hahaha Todoroki you became such softie. 😀 awww. 😀
– Like really he has such soft spot towards Midoriya now,… like he worries so much about him
and checking if he is o.k 😀
– The same for Midoriya, he is very attentive for Todoroki and his feelings and very caring.
Like he always notice if Todoroki suffer when someone will bring up his past demons and will try to calm this.
– Midoriya with time became also the voice of reason for Todoroki, and always brings him back to his senses. 😀 He has such amazing healing power towards him, isn’t he? 😀
– As we know Todoroki is super strong and all, and few time he saved Midoriya, but also Midoriya was saving him from others too. 😀
Todoroki knows this perfectly and is very aware of how big impact for his life has always this little sunshine hero boy. 😀
-When Todoroki failed the exam Midoriya was much more concerned about him that about himself, he was sooo worried.
– And when he heard Todoroki will be able to make this exam again he finally smiled and felt very relived. 😀 Such carrying sweet boyfriend aw. 😉
honestly after chapter 146 I really want it to be a running joke that Rappa will just seek Fatgum and Kirishima out to have a fight at the most random times. Like the two will be out on patrol and all of a sudden Rappa is blocking their path and says “FATTY! RED! LETS HAVE A MATCH!!!” and the two of them are just like “Didn’t we fight last month? How do you keep escaping prison???” Like he hasn’t joined another organization or anything he just does underground fights and then when he’s in the mood he’s like time to challenge my two favorite people!! Like it gets to the point that he is more of an expected nuisance than a surprise threat. The two of them are just like oh Rappa is back lets see if we can convince him to fight us on another day. Most conversations kind of just end up being like this:
“Lets fight!!!!!!”
“Rappa its the end of patrol we’re tired.”
“Who cares!”
“You wanna go at us when we’re 100% dontchya?”
“hm…”
“You aren’t the kind of guy that wants his opponents to be fighting him with a handicap right?”
“HELL NO!”
“Then lets rumble some other day ‘kay?”
“hm… ALRIGHT! I’ll see you two another day! Then we’ll see who lives!”
The “All for One is Izuku’s father” theory is both interesting and hilarious because any time I think about it, I just imagine Toshinori finding out and having a “I love this child with every fiber of my being and he has my complete trust but how the fuck did I manage to choose the one (1) child of my arch-nemesis as a successor” moment.
There’s also this
All for One: That’s my son
Toshinori, who has been Izuku’s father figure for years by now: I’ve already won this game and I didn’t even know I was playing
All for One holding newborn Izuku while forgetting to turn off his quirk stealing bullshit: Ah…I’ll fix that later
I fucking love Kirishima Eijirou and his stupid sharp teeth and ridculous spiky hair and gaudy animal print shirts and impossible hero costume and too loud voice and his love for vintage stuff and manly things he’s a goddamn disaster and he brightens up my life so much
