do kids these days even know what endless 8 is

all you young anime fans with your attack on titans and your maid dragons will never know the sheer hell of the time The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya went in to a time loop story arc and made the same episode 8 times and broadcast that same episode 8 weeks in a row

they didn’t just air the same episode eight times

they made the same episode 8 times in slightly different ways

different camera angles, different shots, different outfits

eight times

eight weeks

the same episode

this is a bit of anime history that i’ve never heard before but sounds horrendous.

my two categories of anime rec are “it’s okay if you don’t really like anime, you’ll probably like this” and “this will not make any goddamn sense to you if you have not wasted years of your life on trash”

y’all took about five minutes to turn this into some kind of contentious madoka post when i was just sitting here innocently contemplating the spectrum from miyazaki to the bread anime

Okay, so, I feel like I should explain the greatest invention of the modern age…that was produced by my apartment.

We call it, the Weeb Ass Shit scale, after our traditional method of asking what anime somebody was watching (”What Weeb Ass Shit is this?”)

It grades a given Anime from 0-10 on three different methods: Weeb, Ass, and Shit. An individual will have different degrees of tolerance for various levels on the different scales.
0 is low, 10 is high.

Weeb is the degree to which the show assumes a familiarity with japanese pop culture or anime tropes in general, not only in terms of the actual content of the show, but occasionally at a conceptual level. Hyperspecialized high schools with all-powerful student councils, for example, add a couple points to the Weeb scale. Same goes for the presence or use of tropes that would be bizzare and off putting if you weren’t used to seeing such things in other anime.

A zero on the Weeb scale could be enjoyed by somebody who doesn’t even know that Japan exists, a 10 assumes the audience possesses a PhD in japanese cultural studies with a focus on animation. Something like Cowboy Bebop comes in at a 1, while I’d put Kill-La-Kill at a 6. Anything of the form “These Girls are anthropomorphic versions of something else” rates at least a 7 in my book.

Next comes the Ass Scale. Put simply, how much Fanservice is in the show. busty character design, male-gaze camera angles, skimpy outfits, hot spring episodes, character A tripping and landing in a compromising position on top of character B, all that nonsense.
At a 0, you’ve got something you would watch with your Grandmother after church (Miyazaki’s stuff comes in at a 0).

Finally, the Shit scale, which covers general overall quality. A 0 indicates that the show is flawless, a 10 holds that you would rather sandpaper your own face than watch it. It should be noted that the Shit scale should be judged independent of the others. Too much T&A shows up on the Ass scale.

Proper use of this scale is in the form W/A/S.
For example, Shokugeki no Soma (Aka Food Wars) would come in at W 4/  A 6/ S 3

This is a game changer!

You know, the older I get, the more I appreciate when adults
in anime are actively horrified and angry to learn what sort of things the
children main characters have been through.

Like, I get that a lot of kids programming is about wish
fulfillment for its viewers. There are a lot of absent adults, a lot of worlds
where kids hold all the responsibility, do all the fighting, because that’s an
understandable thing to appeal to. Kids often feel over-controlled so a world
where kids like them are free to travel and explore and fight and triumph
without any adult supervision sounds pretty rad. I’m sure I was into that when
I was younger.

Years down the line, it strikes me though how young these kids really are. And on the
cusp of Real Actual Adulthood, I’m much more aware of how huge real
independence is. I’m all the more appreciative when an older, more experienced
person steps in and takes the reins, takes responsibility for me in a situation
that’s asking more than what I think I can handle.

I think that’s why I’m so emotionally moved by adults in
anime stepping in for the kids, taking up the responsibility or else feeling
genuine anger over the realization of what these kids have gone through.
Because responsibility is scary, and responsibility when you’re young is scary,
and seeing these older characters understand that and step in just fills me
with such relief and appreciation. And it’s better even if the adult characters
are still fairly young, and still afraid of the situation, yet willing to
sacrifice their own safety and comfort on the behalf of actual children who—all
wish fulfillment aside—should never be placed in the situation they’re in.

Roy “we left children on the battlefield to do our fighting”
Mustang, feeling so outraged, so powerless over what he just let happen, that
he’s moved to break all his careful protocol so Ed, Al, and Ling aren’t left to
face danger alone. All Might, Aizawa, and Thirteen fighting to the bone against
the villain invasion, All Might losing his characteristic smile for the first
time we’ve seen, because the children under their watch have been placed into
danger that they should not have to face at such a young age. Reigen alone
insisting Mob shouldn’t feel cornered into using his powers, shouldn’t force
himself to suffer while fighting Claw, that Reigen himself will fight them
instead despite his own lack of powers because he feels responsible toward Mob.

It’s a trope that means a whole lot to me and I live for the
anime that acknowledge it.

wow cool facts about anime

have you ever wondered why anime people have such big eyes like this:

that’s because of scrooge mcduck

Osamu Tekuza. creator of Astro Boy and often called “The Godfather of Anime,” was a big fan of the Scrooge McDuck comics from back in the fifties and when he created Astro Boy, he based his art style on the Scrooge McDuck comics

so basically this character

who serves as the visual basis for the modern-day anime art style was inspired by this

which means that every time you get horny for this

or for these guys

you’re actually getting your jollies from the great grandkids of this motherfucker

No joke.

please don’t fuck the duck

Now I read all this with my both eyes and now it is your turn

it gets better

a lil while ago, tezuka’s daughter unlocked his work desk

what was inside?

a whack load of furry and transformation porn including one of a woman turning into a boob snake, locked away for SPECIAL OCCASION

when you are fapping to anime tiddies, you are fapping to the legacy of a furry artist

All anime tiddies descend from a literal furry’s admiration of a Charles Dickens duck-AU fanfiction character.

i never understood why everyone was so scandalized by the art locked in his desk cuz like

have you guys actually watched/read anything by tezuka

have you ever heard of Bagi the Monster of Mighty Nature

or Princess Knight

or Ode to Kirihito which is entirely about a disease that makes people transform to have dog-like features

or The Vampires which isn’t about vampires but people who transform into animals

dude has always been crazy about furry transformation and it’s one of the reasons peeps love him
