i too, think it would be different if we were staring into our empty palms and not an incredibly complex device which gives us access to almost all of the information in the world and can be used to communicate with other people
This is like taking a picture of a cyclist and photoshopping the bike out and then making fun of them for being in a silly position
reblog if you DO lie in bed and stare at your palms for hours while dissociating from reality
Where’s that pic of that motorist on a like low riding motorbike or whatever but the bike had been photoshopped out and it looked like he’s farting fire because this is literally that.
fred and george weasley on the top floor in hogwarts trying to get slinkies all the way down by predicting the pattern the stairs are gonna shift in
they actually figure it out, they calculate the exact pattern, and start distributing it
suddenly, students are barely ever late to classes any more and there are significantly fewer incidents of getting lost around the castle
everything goes wonderfully for a week, all the professors are baffled but pleased
until the end of the week when the true purpose for the pattern’s distribution becomes clear. schoolwide slinky race. a thousand conjured slinkies all let loose at the same time. the rustling of the swarm of springs echoes through the halls of hogwarts. the house elves refer to the dreaded Slinky Sunday for centuries
Like on the one hand I want to make a “and you say the future never comes” joke but this is like, fuckin, eldritch, I am sobbing from seeing this and thinking about the people who are trying to nut in this pulsating robot. Everything about this horrifies and disgusts me
I wonder what kind of symbolism they’re trying to get at
“There are a lot of giant robot shows in Japan, and we did want our story to have a religious theme to help distinguish us. Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought it would be mysterious. None of the staff who worked on Eva are Christians. There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool. If we had known the show would get distributed in the US and Europe we might have rethought that choice.” –Kazuya Tsurumaki, assistant director/art director on Neon Genesis Evangelion
Watching this (and fearing broken ankles with each loop) I can’t helping thinking about that old quote Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, except backwards and in high heels.
But no, if you watch closely you’ll see she doesn’t even step on the last chair. That means she had to trust that fucker to lift her gently to the ground while he was spinning down onto that chair. That takes major guts. I’d be pissing myself and fearing a broken neck if I were in her place. Kudos to her.
Okay so this is true, but a tiny part of a wider truth.
Ginger Rogers was a FUCKING BADASS. Ignore for a sec the rampant sexism in Hollywood (they once bleached her hair blonde in wardrobe without telling her beforehand), the fact that she fought her whole career against typecasting and stereotyping from fellow actors (Katharine Hepburn famously said of the Astaire/Rogers partnership “she gave him sex. He gave her class” ) for starting out in musicals, and went on to have a career lasting over fifty years, winning a Best Actress Oscar (Kitty Foyle, 1940). But… JUST focusing on the Astaire movies…
Not only did she dance “backwards” in high heels, the dances were a task in themselves. Astaire was an absolute perfectionist and choreographed for himself, so as a younger, less experienced dancer Rogers came in at a disadvantage and worked her ass off to match him.
Then there’s the filming complications… these numbers were filmed in ONE TAKE. So one thing goes wrong and you have to start over. Maybe you make a mistake or maybe your dress flies up because…
Ginger had to contend with her wardrobe. Dancing in heels is the norm at this time, but dancing in a dress designed for cinema cameras… not so much. They were heavy, embellished, uncomfortable, restrictive and cumbersome and essentially a third member of the dance, strapped to the body of one partner. Not only did she have to dance and look good, she had to control the dress too!
Take this routine from Swing Time… (it gets going proper at 1:30ish)
This dress has weights, YES WEIGHTS, sewn in to the hem to make it fly out and create a visual effect. So it’s heavy, it hurts if it hits you, and your partner gets mad if it hits him. So you gotta control it.
Well it turns out all these factors on this set, this particular day aren’t going so well. So you’re doing take after take, here’s no labour laws, so at 4am after 18 hours you’re still going, even though part of the routine requires you to spin up those curved stairs with no rail at high speed….
Okay so now back to those high heels. In Ginger’s autobiography she vividly remembers this night as the night she bled though her shoes. They did so many takes, her feet blistered, bled, and the white satin high heels she was wearing finished he night pink because they were literally full of blood. And still they keep shooting. She keeps dancing.
The take they use in the film is the last. Early hours. Bloody feet. And she spins, acts and bosses out until that last second. Because she was that professional, talented and bloody minded. This is the last set of spins…
So I say once again. Ginger Rogers was a badass.
She did everything Fred Astaire did backwards, in high heels, wearing a 20 pound dress, exhausted, injured and standing in a pool of her own blood. And watching her perform, you would never know.
“A lot of people get confused when they see this image. They think it was done by computer, but we actually took pigment powder, mixed it with talc to get the right ice-cream pastel colours, and brushed it into the cats.
The owners were two proud members of the Persian cat club. I can’t remember how I found them, but they turned up in a van, covered in cat fur, and stood breathing down my neck as I took the picture. We were worried about putting all that powder into the animals’ fur, but they said, ‘Oh no, they absolutely love it.’ The cats were such vain creatures – they adored being touched and pampered.
We didn’t really think about which cats, or how many, should be done in which colours. We just did each one, and then they had to go back into their cat beds in the owners’ van. I think I lost count of how many were pink and how many were blue, but when we were finished they all came out and looked great together. There wasn’t enough light to do the picture indoors – but, by a fluke, all the cats seemed to gravitate to this clematis at the bottom of some steps. I didn’t arrange them. This is just what the cats did, and they all pretty much stayed where they were throughout. So it’s actually quite a naturalistic portrait – apart from the colour.
At the time, in May 1998, I had no idea how the picture would resonate with people. But it has been the image I’ve been asked about the most. For some reason, people are just fascinated with it – more than any model, house or celebrity I’ve ever shot. Everyone wants to know about the pastel cats.” -Tim Walker
its really disheartening to me when i see teen girls specifically being violently shit on for reacting to/digesting media made for marginalized people in a way that isn’t completely socially sensitive or acceptable.
girls between the ages of 10-15 are really fucking impressionable and when they find an outlet to express their enjoyment for something that’s considered “taboo” like two dudes or two ladies kissing each other or a trans lady and a trans man finding solace in one anothers company or whatever fucking combination you can come up with, dont fucking shit down their throats for not reacting to or enjoying it in a way that you’d expect of a much older, much more socially aware adult.
children are children. you can’t yell at them for not understanding social cues that they have not yet had the chance to learn about. im so tired of seeing teen girls being shit on for being EXCITED about gay media. i’m so tired of seeing their excitement being called “fetishizing.” THEYRE FUCKING TEENAGERS YOU SKIDMARK WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM THEM
give them time to learn!! fuck!! give them time to process and enjoy the media in ways that make sense to them, and like, GENTLY correct them if something they do goes out of bounds, but do not fucking lambast them for their enthusiasm, even when it’s not expressed in a particularly “good” way, whatever “good” might mean to you, however arbitrary that word is.
people learn over time. i know for fucking sure that you didnt come out of the womb knowing all there is to know about the history of the struggles of LGBT people and how you should behave once you have that knowledge. i sure as shit didnt.
im also tired of seeing the word “gross” be applied to teen girls who are enjoying lgbt media. im tired of them being shoved into a corner of dirty and wrong and eye roll worthy just bc they aren’t behaving in a very specific way.
theres nothing WRONG with wanting people to do better, please don’t misquote me on this. there’s nothing wrong with wanting to help people become more sensitive and more thoughtful abt the way they react to lgbt media and what they produce etc etc but like good fucking lord dont come at me with the word “faghag” in regards to a teen girl and expect me to give even the slightest shit about anything you have to say
