A Complete List of Really Fun Cool Things to do with Your Completely Platonic Good Friend/Teammate
in honor of jack and bitty’s one-year anniversary
tease him. constantly. “eat more protein.” jfc. (x)
even though you’re apart for the summer, make sure to regularly text him asking how he’s doing (because you miss him and you’re worried about him). how does he feel? is he recovering from his concussion alright?
you’re worried.
probably you should text him at midnight just to tell him to go to sleep. he’s probably still awake and sleep is an important part of the recovery process.
(you probably have recurring flashbacks to this horrible moment ok you’re just WORRIED)
when you get back to school, hang out in the kitchen just so you can talk to him a lot. (x, x)
ask if he vlogs about you, because like, he seems to tweet about you? (does he talk about you? what does he say about you?) (x)
t e a s e him.
tell him you’ll never stop teasing him. seriously,
chirp him about everything. his accent, his tweeting, his baking. anything. whatever.
(remember: chirping and flirting are variants on the same idea.)
get up at 4am to slam your body against his. wait. this one is surprisingly kind of legitimate. (x)
write him a cute note in french teasing him about tweeting too much while you’re studying together. he’ll have to translate it and that will be funny. maybe he’ll laugh. you like it when he laughs. (x, x)
steal his phone so he pays attention to you. you could also
take his phone and try to post some quality chirps on his twitter. (that last idea is easier said than done, though. twitter’s difficult? oh well. you tried.)
so i’ve been stalking old Disqus comments on the main blog and i just thought the fandom needed to know about this little moment a.k.a. that time jack missed a step on the porch when he saw bitty in short shorts
This is such an interesting dissection of a very common trope in writing female characters that I never really thought about before, but it’s so prevalent and so obvious and so fucking disgusting.
it’s called infantilization and i hate it but “born sexy yesterday” is such a good way to put it
Yeah, though I think there’s another thing going on here too that the vid mentions but could focus more on, which is the male fantasy of “making” a woman precisely as they wish her to be, including her ideas about what is acceptable treatment and romantic/sexual behavior.
One of the HUGE inaccuracies in this, which is to say one of the major fantasies it embodies, is that because these women are naive on a particular topic, they have no self-image or dignity/self-possession, nor instinct/intuition on the particular topic, or on how the world ought to work. Take Celeste(Kim Bassinger’s character) in that My Stepmother is an Alien scene. Who gives a damn whether you know about sandwiches or not, what frigging interstellar traveler is going to let some schmuck yell at her, browbeat her without explanation or even basic interpersonal respect, into doing anything? Why would a professional, an individual accomplished enough to be sent by her planet’s government to investigate a potential attack on their world, someone responsible and respected enough to be entrusted with reality-warping technology who has traveled across the cosmos to confront a potentially hostile alien world and put an end to any threat she finds there, acquiesce to that treatment? Why would she find being insulted and ordered around and treated like she can’t be trusted to make her own decisions acceptable? In reality she wouldn’t, and therein lies the fantasy.
In the movie, because she doesn’t know about Earth and Food she has no concept of the sort of treatment she, as a person, deserves. That’s fundamental to the fantasy in this trope: these women never know how they ought to be treated, because they don’t know some specific thing they apparently have no concept at all of the treatment they deserve, and because of that these men get away with bullying, manipulation, and taking advantage without being caught, and without having to feel guilty for their behavior since there is no chance to get caught(which, of course, also presents their behavior as normal: if only men didn’t have to worry about censure, it says, they’d all treat women this way, which is the sort of mendacious bullshit creeps tend to tell themselves).
But it doesn’t stop there of course; not only do they not get caught out and called on their dickery, which is presented by the movie as “proof” that the woman doesn’t mind it, their dickery is celebrated and admired as “helping” the woman learn her place in the world and become a full and “real” person. That last bit of the dynamic is particularly notable in Tron(where the guy literally brings Quorra into the real world and a flesh-and-blood body) and The Fifth Element(where the movie ends on Leelo and Dallas having sex, after the climax where Dallas teaches Leelo “the Fifth Element” of “Love” and saves the Earth, through kissing her, without her consent, while she’s having an emotional breakdown. A particularly strident stating of the trope’s core thesis).
Hello. I’ve never really done a proper theory post before, but I really hope I can manage to make my points clear? Because this is something I feel strongly about.
First of all, today is October 28th 2016, Homestuck had its Credits three days ago, and Hussie has been hinting at an Epilogue to come. Many people really want the Epilogue, because they feel Homestuck’s ending was unsatisfying. The reasons for this, and whether I agree with them or not, are up for debate and are more complex than they seem. But one reason people have proposed is that Hussie grew tired of writing Homestuck and just whipped up an ending. That is the viewpoint I absolutely disagree with, and I believe I can (if not prove) make a convincing case against. Which means I believe I can make a convincing case for the suggestion that Hussie had this entire ending planned, including people’s dissatisfaction with the ending and the reasons why they found it unsatisfying.
So then. What was the ending, again? Let’s describe it from the perspective of one who didn’t like the ending.
John finds his way into a rewritten world where his friends are not really the friends he knows. Roxy is dead here, indirectly killed by John’s own choice (but it’s okay because we know the real Roxy is still alive). The protagonists fight the Big Bad witch and inexplicably kill her with one lucky blow off-screen. A wolf thing, presented as a dire threat, has nothing to do with the actual fight and is neutralized and appeased naturally. A robotic killer is threatening but ultimately blows itself up. The audience is rewarded with, essentially, fanart of Homestuck characters being affectionate with each other. The audience is pissed off by this turn of events; after all that was built up, suddenly our favourite characters are being drawn by other people, suddenly all plot seems to have been forgotten and just strung together with contrivances. It feels like an insult to everything we’ve come to admire. The next Act, instead of providing more answers, we just get anime, and still not drawn by Hussie. A little while later, we hear again from the story, and we see our focal point character is despondent and mournful, deciding ultimately to take action and leaving us on a cliffhanger.
(I gave this description on Reddit, though I added the last sentence specifically for this post)
That is the ending, right? Let’s go over it again.
John finds his way into a retconned timeline, where the art is predominantly a different style than Hussie’s conventional (and when it is Hussie’s, it is “fast and loose”).
His friends are there, but John is consciously aware that they’re not literally the same people he has known all his life.
John’s very act of arriving in this retconned timeline (his Choice with Typheus in A6A6I4) necessitated that the new Roxy would have to die (which is okay because there is still the old Roxy).
The new John died before we came to this timeline.
The protagonists fight the witch (Batterwitch), the wolf (Jack), and the robot (different Jack).
The witch is inexplicably killed with one lucky blow. (The audience is rewarded with “fanart” of Homestuck characters being affectionate with each other, including a wedding.)
A wolf thing, presented as a dire threat, has nothing to do with the actual fight and is neutralized and appeased naturally, non-lethally.
A robotic killer is threatening but ultimately blows itself up.
The audience is pissed off by this turn of events; after all that was built up, suddenly our favourite characters are being drawn by other people, suddenly all plot seems to have been forgotten and just strung together with contrivances.
The next Act, instead of providing more answers, we just get anime, and still not drawn by Hussie.
A little while later, we hear again from the story (Credits), and we see our focal point character (John) is despondent and mournful…
…deciding ultimately to take action (fight Caliborn) and leaving us on a cliffhanger leading presumably up to the Masterpiece.
Does this… make sense? Do you see why I personally believe this whole “ending” is just another ruse, another instance of Homestuck being shaped like itself?
i’m entirely prepared to believe that this is all we get of homestuck and caliborn managed to ruin shit for both the characters AND readers. but it sure would be cool if the last couple years were a fake-out on hussie’s part for him to get his shit back together and write some actually good stuff, instead of just him quietly trying to dig himself out of a hole he’s not having any more fun in.
So my boyfriend came out as trans last night and I realized something… back when we first started dating we identified as lesbians, then I came out as trans and consequently realized I’m bisexual, and now I’m in a gay relationship. So what I’m trying to say is that I have actually been LGBT as a singular person. Every single acronym. I have ascended and reached gay nirvana
