In the last few months I wound up unfollowing a bunch of people for excessive political talk (on Twitter, not talking about any of you), and it’s amazing how all these people who seemed like such essential and fun follows completely disappeared from my consciousness instantly, like they’d never been there in the first place. It’s to me an uncomfortable reminder of how ephemeral and inconsequential almost all online interaction is, and how easy it would be to disappear without leaving so much as a ripple in other’s lives, even though things feel so tangible in the moment. Not that I haven’t made a few genuine connections, but so much of my time and mental energy is spent in the shallow end of the pool. I like my brand and I like displaying myself, but ultimately it doesn’t add up to anything beyond itself. It’s not generative, it just feels like it is.

“It’s not generative, it just feels like it is” can describe so many things.
